Miss Green America

Submitted by DE on Tuesday, 6 January 2009No Comment

For the first time this year a contestant for the Miss America Pagent is wearing a sustainable, eco-friendly gown. Miss Vermont Ashley Wheeler’s gown for the competition will be made from a hemp, silk and cotton blend along with recycled lace and beading details. The dress is also being made in her home state as Ashley wants to use the “home grown” along with the green aspects of the gown to create her platform.  “I thought, ok, keep the money local, and also go with environmental responsibility; it’s the perfect fit,” Wheeler said.  Ashley added, “I really feel like I’m carrying the state of Vermont with me.” Hopefully the environment and social responsibility will be the platform for many more contestants than Miss Vermont.  Good luck to all of the contestants. The Miss USA Pageant airs January 24th, 2009.
