Greenhouse Nightclub-NY/the World’s 1st Eco-Friendly Club
A true victory for the Green Party! Thanks to Jon B., owner of NYC’s Guesthouse and Home, we now have our first green nightclub: Greenhouse. The 6,000 sq. foot venue opened in SoHo November 12th and is being called the first environmentally friendly club in the world. Some of it’s green features include LED lighting, 360 Vodka, and bamboo walls. The staff uniforms are from the Edun label which means they are fair-trade and of sustainable fibers. The power used in the club is 100 % wind-power generated (renewable energy credits) and the bathrooms have low-flow toilets and waterless urinals.Jon says he was thinking of a club concept for the next generation. He says, “I think green is cool. And if it’s not cool yet, it’s going to be cool.”
Greenhouse NY 150 Varick Street
Greenhouse is the first nightclub to seek LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification. This is the stamp given by the US Green Building Council which address 6 areas: Sustainable sites, Water efficiency, Energy and atmosphere, Materials and resources, Indoor environmental quality, and Innovation and design process. Establishments can be granted different levels of LEED certification, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Certified, based on their rating in these areas. With the amount of waste that generally accompanies the nightclub atmosphere many feel that this will be a challenge for Greenhouse but we applaud them for being the first nightclub to go for the LEED approval.
